Year 13 were continuing to plan their film trailers - some amusing production company indents have been created.

Period 3 - 12 Film Studies

Year 12 have decided which segment of film (a section that lasts 3-5 minutes) that they intend to analyse for their FM1 unit. Some interesting choices from American Psycho, 300, Mr Bean, Jurassic Park, Black Swan and the Watchmen.

First lesson back after half term and we started to look at the final unit of Communication Techniques. You need to look on FROG for guidance but you need to make sure that you research a range of presentation software.

Year 13 are creating their own film trailers as part of their final task for the Film Studies unit. You need to make sure that you have a minimum of 20seconds to show your progress by Monday 7th November.

Year 12 are deciding on their 3-5 minute film extract to analyse. Remember it needs to be an extract that you are passionate about for some reason. If you can't find an extract that you are passionate about then you are on the wrong course. By Wednesday 3rd Nov you must have 2or3 paragraphs explaining your decision.

We made sure that everyone was up to date with their units before the half term holiday. Students were also making sure that they had their presentations completed and that they are ready to be delivered first lesson back after the holiday.

Period 2 - 11B GCSE
Completing coursework for Unit 2 and Unit 4 - students were reminded that the deadline for Unit 2 and Practical productions for Unit 4 is the first lesson back after the half term break. We also discussed the brief for Unit 4 and made sure that everyone was reminded of the requirements particularly the need to include positive representations of teenagers from the North East and what is needed for the pre-production documents.

Period 6 - 12BTEC
Looking at music ownership and distribution today and we used the 2002 release by Elvis vs JXL 'A Little Less Conversation' - We looked at the complicated world of music ownership to see if we could work out the relationships between various record labels and their parent companies.

Year 11 are getting to the business end of their two year double award GCSE course so I thought it might be useful to just update them on where they are, where they should be, what they need to do next and state the obvious!

This is a 4 unit course:

Unit 1 - (This was your reality TV exam and unless you are Jack or Nathan you have done this and your result was probably very good - most of them were!)

Unit 2 - This is your year 10 coursework and you should have a red folder that consists of 3 pieces of coursework:

Comics (Analysis of 2 front covers and a sketch of your own comic front cover)
Film Promotion (Analysis of film poster and trailer that must cover representation in detail and your own design film poster and trailer storyboard)
Magazine Production (research and planning documents; front cover, contents page, double page spread and an evaluation)

Lesson 2 - 12 BTEC
Lesson in the PE classroom disrupted because of computers not working, however we discussed the showreels that everyone will need to complete by the end of the course. The idea would be to gather a range of material as we complete the various units throughout the two year course. Michael and Andrew used the arctic conditions to film a report on the nusual amounts of snow we have at the moment.

We created student blogs to help with homework and research today. Our first posts were introductions and we made a note of our homework. Homework is to complete market research for Wednesday 24th November.
Market research should include:

Analysis of at least 2 TV adverts for similar products to the one you are planning to create a TV advert for
Research into the products that you are competing with - what are their Unique Selling Points? (how do they make themselves different from other products) - Who are their target audiences?

On top of this you need to make sure that you have completed the improvements to Task 1 - Deadline 24th November.

Because of a Year 11 English revision session I am not in the lesson today. First thing to do is to go to the Shared area / Media Studies / BTEC First Year 10 2010-2011 / 10B Media

You have a number of tasks to complete today

Complete any outstanding work and improvements for Task 1 - see the spreadsheet for the mark you are on for this task at the moment and make sure this is completed by the end of the lesson. All folders should be handed in at the end of the lesson for final marking.
Make sure that your analysis of the 5 different types of TV Advertising is completed, printed out and in you folder.
Complete Market research for products you are competing with (find out the different ways they are advertised; the different USP's for similar products; analyse a range of adverts (both print and television) for similar products.
Carry out some audience research (create a questionnaire and get results; build an audience profile)
Carry out some production research (see worksheets on shared area - treatment; storyboard; script; mood board; planning resource sheets; project meeting minutes)

Make sure that your work is handed in at the end of the lesson so that Task 1 can be remarked. (Can Rebecca L and Rebecca S bring that folder to Media 1 just before the end of the lesson)

Students were continuing to improve Task 1 assessments for their Research into Creative Media Production unit. Those students who have already achieved a distinction on this task or who have completed their ammendments were starting to carry out some market research for the product they have chosen to advertise.

10C BTEC - Period 2
Improvements were being made to Assessment 1 today and students were reminded to ensure that they have a wide range of examples for each of the sections and to make sure that they identify whether the examples are primary or secondary research and whether they produce qualitative or quantitative data.

11D GCSE - Period 3
Last lesson to collect and collate research into the representation of teenagers in the media as part of their Unit 4 coursework. In tomorrow's lesson we will start to look at pre-production research for their practical pieces.

13A2 - Period 5
Students were continuing to research their primary texts for their MEST 4 Critical Investigation. All work should be handed in next Thursday 11th November.

After yesterday's disappointing lesson Year 10 have partially redeemed themselves by working really hard today and improving their Unit 1 Task 1 work. There were a number of students who missed today's double lesson due to a visit to the beach? so they need to ensure that they catch up or stay back to find out what they missed. Well done to Michael, Scott, Jack and Nicole who have redeemed themselves and improved their Aiming High grades by working tirelessly during the lesson and attending stay back after school.

We discussed Gillian Dyer's Lines of Appeal and students were trying to identify these in the adverts they are familiar with.

We looked at the various HermitageMedia websites including this blog that are used throughout the course to help students with their work. We then started to look at research in the media - we looked at primary and secondary research and the differences between them.

Catching up with coursework today - students were working on their film and comic coursework the deadline for which will be before work experience.

Introduction to course structure and the units to be covered. Although there will be a lot of crossover between units we will start the course with Unit 3 - Research Techniques for the creative media industries.

We started today's lesson with a test on Reality Television and Docu-soaps. As we went through the answers you should have a good idea about how well you have done. We also looked at how ordinary people have used reality TV as a vehicle to becoming celebrities (see presentation and page "Reality TV - Docu-soaps 3").

You should continue to complete unit 3 and 4 bearing in mind that the deadline has now passed.
For Unit 4 you need to complete an evaluation that includes a section where you write about the feedback you received from your target audience. In order to do this you will need to give a short presentation on your moving image/website/radio advert productions as a group and get some feedback from your peers.
When you have completed Unit 3 and your practicals you should start to prepare this presentation where you explain your ideas/concepts and decision.

Remember that you need to discuss i) how you have successfully contributed to your campaign ii) how you have met the brief and iii) how you have targeted your audience successfully.

We looked at some key theories and theorists today that you need to explore in your critical investigations and that you may also need to use in your MEST 3 exam. We started with a recap on Postmodernism and the work of Lyotard and Baudrillard, followed by a discussion of semiotics and structuralism.

We were making sure that students had their log in details for the Learning Gateway so that they can prepare for a test on the areas studied so far, which include the BBC license fee debate, postmodernism, the writings of lyotard (The Postmodern Condition) and Baudrillard (hyperreality and simulcra) and so they can prepare a presentation on a postmodern text of their choice.
